Window Draperies

Curtains and drapes add a sense of drama to any room. You can make subtle or dramatic changes for your living room, kitchen or bedroom using curtains. There are several styles and types of materials that create a look. Depending on your budget, you will need a bunch of curtain accessories as well, including the rod, holder and any valances that you also want to install. Curtain design is extremely intricate, so you have to focus on picking the right fabrics as well as colors for your room.

Corner Windows

The corner window is sometimes difficult to decorate, because how to you deal with all of that fabric. However, if you set up the rods a certain way, you can leave the corner open and simply have the drapes hanging at the far left and right edges of the window. You also want to be able to draw the drapes more efficiently, so it's important that you use drapes that aren't heavy.

Pleated Drapes

A pleated drapery is hung from hooks that are attached to the rod, sliding open and then closing around the window. There are several types of pleated drapes from pinch pleats to pencil pleats. Goblet pleats are actually the most common. Pinch pleats will have a double or even triple fold. Triple pleats have a drapery hook with three prongs, while double pleats only use a two-prong.

Rod Pocket

Gathered draperies or rod pocket drapes are flat panels that hang down from a curtain rod. They have pockets sown into the fabric that allow it to attach and hide the curtain rod. Rod pockets are usually used beneath drapery toppers, like a valance, jabot or swag. You can dress up a rod pocket by attaching curtain rings or using a decorator rod.

Grommets

Grommets start off as holes that are etched with wood or metal, then cut into a drape, such as a flat panel. The finish on the grommets looks more decorative, especially when paired with other architectural details. These kinds of drapes will often define the style of the room. If you want a casual look, you can use a drape without a topper to give it a more contemporary feel.
