Upgrading a Nursery to a Toddler Room

A major remodeling project for many families occurs when a baby moves from their nursery surroundings to a toddler room. In some cases this means just upgrading the bed from a crib to a toddler bed, but some families take a second step and complete and entire remodeling project. If you are wondering what a toddler remodeling project entails, here are a few points to keep in mind.

Electronics and Appliances

When a baby moves into the toddler stage there are certain electronics and appliances that should be removed from the room. Diaper warmers, projectors, and crib attachments will need to be removed and cords will need to be hidden along carpeting. In a toddlers room, electronics should be kept on higher shelves where children cannot reach them. The cords should be hidden well and should not be in areas were children could trip over them or where they can pull the electronic down on themselves. As for appliances, these should be limited in a toddler room.

Storage

Creating a storage area in a toddler room can be challenging. Unlike newborns, toddlers can move around and can or will grab everything in sight. For this reason you will want to make sure that storage items are kept out of reach of the toddler, while still being in reach of adults. Toy storage should be open. This means that open containers are best for toys with mesh containers or flexible mesh containers being an optimal choice. Do not place open storage bins in the room. These can be a risk to the toddler. Make sure that the open containers for toys are in easy reach of the child not only for play time, but also for times when they are learning to clean up after playtime.

Vinyl vs Paint

Many parents are now considering the vinyl option versus painting in a child’s room. This is a great option, especially when you are making the transition from a nursery to a toddler bedroom. A solid color is generally placed on the walls and removable vinyl stickers are placed throughout the room. These sticker kits are available at most stores and match crib bedding and toddler bedding. When the baby moves from a nursery setting to a toddler setting, the stickers can be changed along with the bedding.

Décor

When you are transitioning the décor of a nursery to a toddler room, you may question what items are best. Look to the child’s personality for clues. You will find there are certain animals or objects the child flocks to or is attracted to more than other items. Focus on these for their toddler room. Make sure the child is present and can be a part of the room change. They may not understand all aspects of the room or the remodeling but they will understand that it is there room and that will bring them comfort as well as a form of independence.
