How to Use Craigslist to Lower Your Remodeling Budget

When you first start a remodeling or home DIY project, you want to make sure you stick to a budget. This is sometimes easier said than done. When you create a budget, you need to list every item you will need and a cost estimate of that item. You will also want to list if you need certain supplies and if those supplies can work with other projects. Once you have a budget, it is time to stick to it. This is the hard part. Choosing Craigslist as an option for your supplies can help you stick to that budget and make things a lot easier. Here are a few reasons why.

Free Items

When other homeowners and developers are finishing projects, they will offer certain items for free. This saves them the cost of having the items hauled off and it lets you bank on the savings. Bricks, wood, barn wood, and other items will be placed on Craigslist throughout the week. Start going down your list of items and supplies to see if there are any listings. Remember, most of these items will need to be hauled off by the buyer, so make sure you can pick up what you want.

Low Cost Items

When older homes are remodeled, items like stained glass windows and doors are usually the first thing to hit the classifieds. Items like these would normally cost you hundreds of dollars. With a few simple searches on craigslist and some inquiry emails, you can find these items for less than $100 an in some cases less than $50.

Contractors

Local contractors will place their services on Craigslist to attract customers in various areas. This is also a great place for new contractors to make a name for themselves and start building a client base. If you need electrical work, basic construction, fencing, cement, or driveway work then check out the listings. You may have budgeted $100 to $1000 for the project and you may find you can knock that down by half. This will save you money and will let you find reliable service that you can turn to time and again for various projects.

Changing Your Plans

Sometimes the best laid plans still have problems. You may estimate that a project will cost $1000 only to find that only a small portion will cost that much. You may find out that an idea you had is not something you can put into actual practice and complete. When you are looking for the supplies for the original project on Craigslist, you will not only see the true price of your project but you will be able to make changes and find better ideas to keep the project going.

Remember a few simple rules when you are using Craigslist. Make sure you meet in a public location. If that is impossible, bring someone with you. Always make sure you are not only saving money, but that you are safe while you are doing it. If something doesn’t sound right, then trust your gut. There’s always a better deal out there.
